wheat free chocolate chip cookies
that actually taste like chocolate chip cookies
I’ve tried MANY wheat free chocolate chip cookies.
Some good, some not so good.
Some recipes that were fairly easy to follow, and some that contained way too many strange sounding ingredients.
They all had one thing in common; NONE of them tasted like a true chocolate chip cookie. Just because there are chocolate chips in there does not a chocolate chip cookie make.
My family does not need to eat wheat or gluten free, but I was really hoping to make a cookie that tasted like the real deal chocolate chip cookie, only with slightly healthier ingredients.
One taste of the cookie dough, and I knew they were going to be good, but the true test would be passing them by the kids. Charlie and Stella can usually pick out a “healthified” recipe by sight alone.
When I saw Charlie sneaking a cookie out of the microwave (my favorite hiding spot), I knew I had a winner.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups oat flour
- 1 1/2 cups almond meal
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter VERY soft
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
Instructions
- combine the flours, baking soda, and salt
- cream together the butter and sugars, add the egg and vanilla
- stir in the flour, and finally the chocolate chips
- chill dough for at least 2 hours, but it is best left overnight
- pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees
- scoop cookie dough into 2 tbsp size balls, and place on a parchment or silpat lined baking sheets
- bake for 10 - 12 minutes, (bake 8 - 9 minutes if making smaller sized cookies)
- allow to cool on baking sheet for 2 - 3 minutes, before moving to rack to complete cooling
The cookie dough needs to chill at least two hours or they will be spread a lot. No one likes flat cookies. I let mine chill overnight, and brought the dough out of the fridge while the oven pre-heated. The cookies can be made gluten free if you use gluten free oat flour such as Bobs Red Mill
If you are looking for a wheat free chocolate chip cookie that tastes like the original, this is the one.
Enjoy!

I love your hiding spot! I’m going to need to try that one 🙂 These look amazing and I love that there aren’t any weird ingredients in them. Pinned.
thanks so much! the microwave works great, until the kids discover it 🙂
We used oat flour a lot in pancakes and waffles, but I have never tried it in cookies. Bookmarking this to try!
I never would have thought to add it to pancakes and waffles, trying that this weekend

Haha, I can totally relate. I feel like I ate SO many pancakes that tasted nothing like “pancakes” on my quest for a grain free version last year. These cookies look awesome!
thanks Gina, SO any grain or whet free versions are okay, but nothing like the original, and that is always my goal
These cookies look amazing! Love that they are wheat free.
thank you so much
All I can think about now is hiding with a stack of cookies and a glass of milk. These look fabulous!!!
