simple street tacos
In our neighborhood, there are MANY Mexican restaurants. We have two on our small street alone, there’s another a few blocks down, and then of course there are the major chains. But when we want authentic (in my opinion) tacos, we head to a small walk up stand around the corner. Not the usual place I’d think to get a great meal, but the street tacos are the best I have ever had.
Street tacos are not covered in sauce, salsa, or sour cream; there isn’t even any cheese. A little onion and fresh cilantro Β are all they need.
In a simple street taco, the meat is by far the star.
We love visiting the small taco stand during the summer, but during the winter it’s not all that fun to eat outside, and the tacos get cold before we get them home, so I tried to recreate our favorite street tacos at Β home.
We now have a new taco Tuesday recipe to add to our collection!
Ingredients
- 2 lb skirt steak
- 1 cup of orange juice
- juice from 1 lime
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 white onion, diced (save a few tablespoons for topping)
- 1/4 cup cilantro, roughly chopped
- salt and pepper
- corn tortillas
- cilantro for topping
Instructions
- season your steak with salt and pepper
- whisk together the orange juice, lime juice, garlic, onion and cilantro
- place your steak in a zip top bag, and pour the marinade over the meat
- seal bag, and refrigerate at least 2 hours
- heat a grill, or skillet over med-high heat
- remove the steak from the marinade (discard marinade)
- thinly slice steak
- grill or saute until cooked through (6 - 8 minutes)
- while your meat is cooking, wrap tortillas in a clean towel, and warm in a 200 F. oven
- serve tacos topped with diced onion and cilantro

These tacos are seriously everything! This is exactly how I like my tacos, completely plain with the sprinkle of onion and cilantro just how I get at my local Mexican spots. You did these justice.
You know, I’ve never had street tacos! But these sound fantastic so I need to make them!
Those look soooo good! I need to try these!
What a great marinade for the beef – and such a simple taco. Looks mouthwatering. And as much fun as taco stands are, I’ll bet yours are just as good and a lot less expensive. With sides and beer, I’m set!
Mmm I’m in the mood for tacos now!

I love street tacos! I miss living in California where authentic street tacos are in abundance. This will satisfy my endless cravings for simple, delicious street tacos from some grubby, but delicious stand.
it does seem like the grubbier the stand, the better the food π
It does not get any better then this. Truly taco perfection.
