are you the kind of person that gets into food ruts? i absolutely am. when i joined weight watchers 2 years ago,  i started each day the same way. with  a bowl of berries, 1/4 cup of yogurt, and 1/4 cup of granola. i ate it every morning. for an entire year.  then, when i could not even look at another bowl of yogurt i switched to  soft boiled eggs and tomato slices. this was my breakfast for months. now i’m stuck in an apple and almond butter rut. 

today after the gym i found myself craving yogurt and granola. and oatmeal cookies. always oatmeal cookies. not wanting to undo my efforts at the gym, i combined two cravings into one delicious granola that tastes and smells just like fresh baked oatmeal raisin cookies.

oatmeal raisin cookie granola


  • 4 cups old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup flax seed meal
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 4 Tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup almond butter
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups raisins


  • preheat oven to 300°
  • line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper
  • in a large bowl combine the oats, flax, and spices
  • in a small saucepan melt the butter over medium-low heat
  • whisk in the brown sugar, almond butter, and maple syrup
  • once the sugar has dissolved, remove from the heat, stir in vanilla, and  pour mixture over the oats.
  • stir to combine well - making  sure the oats are evenly coated
  • spread oats onto prepared baking sheet
  • bake at 300° for 30 minutes
  • stir oats to create large clumps and add raisins
  • make sure granola is completely cool before storing

how to get granola with soft clumps

i prefer my granola with large soft clumps. to get large clumps i only stir the granola once it comes out of the oven. if you like your granola in smaller pieces, give it a stir a few times while it is baking.

to prevent burning and to keep the clumps soft and more cookie like i bake this granola at a lower temperature. if you like your granola more on the crisp side, raise the temperature to 350°. make sure to stir your oats, getting into the corners of the pan, at least once while baking, or it will burn.

the smell while baking was intoxicating. by the time i got the yogurt into my bowl, i had already taken so many handfuls of  granola that i wasn’t  hungry anymore.
