I sure hope you aren’t over the sweets, because I have your new favorite breakfast right here.
Christmas may have come and gone, but we are still in holiday mode around here. Right down to our hot chocolate oatmeal.
We’re in NY visiting family, and while I’m bummed we didn’t get a white Christmas (we’ll have to try again next year), we are having a blast. Turns out winter can still be fun even when you aren’t up to your neck in snow drifts. Although Stella may not agree with me. Se was SO hoping to go sledding and wear her new snow boots.
Snow or no snow, winter just wouldn’t be the same without the hot chocolate, and now you have a reason to enjoy hot chocolate for breakfast.
Ingredients
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 2 ounces chocolate, chopped
- 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- whipped cream for toppping
Instructions
- combine milk and chocolate in a medium saucepan over medium heat
- bring to a boil, reduce heat and stir until chocolate melts completely
- add oats, sugar and vanilla
- cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally
- top with whipped cream and chocolate chips
You may think that whipped cream for breakfast is over the top (and it is), but trust me you don’t want to skip it here.
Enjoy!

We actually just got a random, unexpected snow day yesterday and have a delayed school start tomorrow. This would be the perfect special breakfast to make for the kids! Thank you!
oh how I miss snow days 🙂 thank you !
We did not have a white Christmas either, but it is minus 25 degrees Celsius today so I think someone is trying to make up for our very warm Christmas! I am digging this hot chocolate oatmeal and a batch would work perfectly right now to warm me up!
ooh, that is chilly 🙂 nothing better than hot oatmeal to warm you up!
This looks delicious! Actually it would be a perfect ‘surprise’ for my kids in the morning before school! Plus I really love how easy it is… 15 minutes of warm homemade goodness!
even my non-oatmeal eater loved it! thanks so much Kaitie
This looks so easy and fantastic! I’m pretty sure such an amazing breakfast that would impress a bunch of guests.
thanks so much!
Well I’m sorry Stella didn’t get her snow, but oh my goodness, this hot chocolate oatmeal is amazing. I absolutely must try this. And my kids may send you thank you notes, Heather. Seriously, it’s in the low 20’s here in NH today and I would’ve rolled out of my bed a lot faster this a.m. if this was the breakfast plan. I love that this recipe is made with all “real” ingredients….delicious.
thank you so much Allie! hopefully we’ll get snow nest year 🙂 either way we love this oatmeal
