homemade flour tortillas are so easy and delicious, you will never go back to store bought
even as teenagers, there are only a handful of meals that i know for sure my kids will eat without a fight. pizza of course. mac and cheese and anything wrapped inside of a homemade tortilla.
i can’t remember when i first started making tortillas. it feels like i have made them every tuesday for forever, but it’s probably more like 5 or 6 years. i don’t always feel like making them come 5:00; some weeks it’s the last thing i feel like doing, but when they are done it is always worth the little bit of effort it takes. that and the look i get from stella if the tortillas aren’t homemade keep me rolling week after week.
this recipe makes 8 flour tortillas, which is perfect for taco tuesday, but i strongly recommend doubling the recipe or you’ll find yourself making another batch a day or two later. you can never have too many tortillas in the fridge, at least at my house.
one bite and i know you will never go back to store bought tortillas again

homemade flour tortillas
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup water
- 3 Tbsp butter, melted
Directions:
- in a large bowl (or bowl of a stand mixer) combine the flour and salt
- stir in the water and melted butter
- knead either by hand or with a dough hook attachment, until you have a smooth ball
- cover and let rest 10 minutes
- divide dough into 8 pieces, and roll each into a ball
- on a lightly floured surface roll each ball into a circle
- preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat
- cook tortillas 1-2 minutes per side (they will be light golden and begin to bubble up)
- tortillas can be kept warm in a 200 degree oven wrapped in a clean cotton towel
if you plan to make a double batch, the cooled tortillas can be kept in a zip topped bag in the fridge for up to a week. they tend to harden a bit, but a few seconds in the microwave and they are almost as good as they day they are made. homemade flour tortillas, even a few days later, are far better than any tortillas you can buy at the store.
just ask stella, who flat out refuses to eat if i serve her a store bought tortilla.
so, tired or not, come 5:00 on any given tuesday you can find me rolling tortillas at the kitchen counter.
enjoy!
These look FANTASTIC!!! Wow!!!
that’s sweet maria – thank you. they were really good
Mmm I love homemade tortillas! I’m totally in the same boat though, I’ve made them before and I wasn’t in love with them. I’ll definitely give yours a try though (subbing coconut oil for butter though I think). Also when did you change your website design?! So classy.
thanks Lisa – got a face-lift just this week 🙂 let me know how they work with coconut oil – this was the first time I’ve used butter
You know I’ve never made my own tortillas before, but have always wanted to. Now it’s an absolute must! These look fantastic 🙂
Happy Blogging!

thanks Emily – wishing I had some left for lunch
What size tortillas do they make? Can they be frozen?
thanks!
they are about 7 inches – and I bet they wold freeze very well – but we never have any left 🙂
These look delicious! Wondering what type of oil you sprayed them with?
I used a spray grapeseed oil, but any mild tasting oil will work
These look wonderful! I’ve had trouble rolling mine out previously, and was starting to wonder if it was worth buying a tortilla press… but this looks absolutely doable! Thank you! I wonder too if this would work with masa harina to make corn tortillas?
those are next on my to-do list!
Yummy! I have always wanted to make my own flour tortillas!
you will never want to buy them again!
What?! You make tortillas look so easy! Definitely trying these – I’ve always wanted to try, but was too intimidated. No yeast, no rising, no dozen bowls – I’m in love with this recipe 🙂

This doesn’t look too intimidating! I ran out of tortillas one night and served nachos instead! I’ll have to try this next time!
they are not hard to do at all. it takes a batch or two to get a feel for how thin to roll the, but after that you won’t believe how easy they are
I can’t believe how easy to make these look! No doubt they’re better than the ones I buy at the store!

Quick question, do you use hot, warm, cold or cool water for your flour tortillas. Just wondering since I’m new at this.
They look delicious and easy.
Thank you so much for your time.
