faux Cronuts

The Kinnairds are in celebration mode.  What are we celebrating? Well,  tomorrow is Friday, that is reason enough.  The kids have had two TERRIFIC weeks of school, and Saturday happens to be the hubby’s birthday.

I decided that this needs cronuts. What is a cronut? {if you have not already heard the BUZZ they have been causing} A cronut is the crossing of a croissant and a doughnut…two of my all time favorite things.  I probably lost you at croissant; croissants are a LOT of work.  But have no fear, I have a GREAT cheat for you…hence the faux in faux cronuts.

I happen to  stumble upon Pillsbury Grands  {Big and Buttery} Crescent Rolls, and I couldn’t resist.

I hadn’t seen these before, but I immediately knew what I was going to do with them.


dough for cronuts


Roll’em up

Fry them in oil


Toss them in cinnamon and sugar

You NEED to do this. Yes, they require a bit of exercise afterwards, but are completely worth every single calorie.

faux Cronuts


  • 1 tube of Pillsbury Big and Buttery Grands Crescent Rolls
  • Oil for frying - {I used Spectrum Canola with Coconut Oil}
  • you want at least 4 inches of oil to fry in
  • 1/2 cup Sugar mixed with 1 tsp cinnamon


  • heat your oil over med - med/high {make sure you use a large pot to prevent splashing}
  • {I test the oil by dropping in a small piece of dough - it should bubble and begin to brown quickly when the oil is ready}
  • while the oil is heating, roll each crescent triangle {beginning with he short side} into a loose rope, and then form your circle {making sure to tuck the ends together to seal them}
  • fry them one at a time {about 1 minute on each side}
  • drain on a paper towel or brown paper bag
  • dip both sides in the cinnamon sugar
  • {these are BEST eaten soon after making, and will not be very good days later}



Zulka  was kind enough to send me some of their  Morena Pure Cane Sugar to try.  It has a much more natural taste than processed white sugar, and it made a wonderful coating for the cronuts.

{the cronut itself was delicious, but I think the sugar and cinnamon was  definitely the star}

SO… eating cronuts may not  be the the most nutritional breakfast, and I know I won’t be making them all the time, but I have SO many filling ideas that my head is swimming.
