chick fil a copycat

So, my daughter Stella is pretty much a vegetarian, except for bacon and

Chick fil A

We had never been, and then our school had a fundraiser this spring.

Can you say

Even more shocking,

Stella ate a chicken sandwich,

something she had never

in her entire 11 years

She’s pretty much asked for one every day since.

I had no choice but to learn how to make my own.

There are so many copycat recipes out there. I tried a bunch, and while good, they weren’t really what I was looking for, that and I really do not like to fry {unless it’s a doughnut of course}.

I did want that fried taste and crispy texture though, so I knew where to turn. Karly from Buns In My Oven has got the BEST oven fried chicken strips recipe. We make these all the time.

My method of cooking decided, I went to work on the chicken and breading.

No doubt about it, to make a chick fil a,  you MUST marinate the chicken in pickle juice. You simply will not get the juicy, zesty taste any other way.

That’s step 1

Step 2 – the coating

I used flour,  powdered sugar, and my everyday seasoning from Trader Joe’s – it includes salt, peppercorns, mustard seed, paprika, garlic, and chili pepper ( or use 1/2 tsp of each salt, pepper, dry mustard, paprika, and garlic salt)

To get a nice thick coating to stick, after the chicken came out of the pickle juice I soaked it in egg and milk. Not too long, but at least 5 minutes.

Then just dip in the flour, press to coat.

Oven fried in butter, 15 minutes each side, and

The best copycat Chick fil A

Stella said so herself.

Copycat Chick fil A {oven fried} Sandwiches

  • 4 - 4ounce chicken breasts
  • 1/2 cup of pickle juice
  • 1/2 - 3/4 cup flour
  • 2 Tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 stick of butter {melted}

  • marinate the chicken in the pickle juice for at least an hour, 4 hours is preferred
  • combine the flour, powdered sugar, and spices in a bowl and set aside
  • in a shallow baking dish whisk the egg with the milk, add the chicken and let sit at least 5 minutes
  • pour the melted butter on a rimmed baking sheet
  • dip each chicken breast in the flour, toss to coat well, pressing to make enough coating stick to the chicken
  • place on baking sheet
  • repeat with the other pieces
  • bake at 425 15 minutes per side
  • serve on buttered, toasted buns with pickles

Of course you need to serve it on a nice and  buttery, toasted bun with pickle slices.

Now, I just need to perfect my waffle fries and we’ll be all set.
