Chocolate Red Wine Cake

The Holidays.
That special time of year when calories don’t count, and indulgence is pretty much everywhere you turn.
That’s probably why everyone one is in such a good mood. Who isn’t happy when stuffed with gingerbread and chocolate {the cocktails don’t hurt either}
I for one have the...I’ll worry about it in January attitude when it comes to food in December. The more festive the better, and that includes wine.
It doesn’t get more festive than Chocolate Red Wine.
Yes, you read that correctly. ChocolatRouge is a blend of rich chocolate and fine red wine, delicious as an after dinner drink on the rocks, but it is AMAZING when baked into a dark chocolate loaf cake.
Oh, and I bet it would make the BEST molten lava cake
Ingredients
- 8 tbsp butter {room temperature}
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 eggs {room temperature}
- 3/4 cup ChocolateRouge
- 2tsp vanilla
- 1 - 11/4 cups of flour
- 1/2 cup of dark cocoa powder {could use regular cocoa powder as well}
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
- in a bowl combine 1 cup of the flour with the dry ingredients
- in the bowl of a stand mixer cream together the butter and sugars
- add the eggs one at a time{scrape the bowl between additions}
- gradually add in the wine and vanilla
- stir in the dry ingredients
- {if the batter is too wet add a bit of the extra flour}
- spoon into a buttered loaf pan
- bake @350 for 60 minutes
**This is an adults only cake, not all of the wine will bake off
But it is one deliciously sweet way to celebrate this holiday season.

chocolate slush cake | in jars
Chocolate and wine; wine and chocolate – works for me! This would make a nice ending for a dinner party…. maybe with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream!
now that would be good! thanks Deb
The Chocolate wine cake looks amazing-but which Chocolate Rouge? Dark Red blend, sweet blend red, or milk chocolate? I imagine each would have a really different outcome.
I used the milk chocolate
What is choc rough and when was it added to batter?
the chocolate rouge is the wine
I wonder if this could be made with almond flour?
you could definitely try it, but I would be more dense
Any hints about how it might be possible to adapt the recipe if we have no way getting our hands on some ChocolateRouge? I’m from Australia, but I love chocolate and wine (and cake) as much as the next girl!
you could simply replace it with red wine. the recipe I got the idea from just used red wine
Yay re replacing with a red wine – anything in particular recommended?? (I live in Ireland.)
any sweet, fruity red would be great.
Wait, how much flour is used? This recipe look incredible.
this recipe calls for 1 1/4 cups of flour – thanks
But the directions say only use 1 cup of flour….I only used just one cup just now. Very confusing. Hope it turns out
in the directions i explain to use 1 cup of flour, but if your batter is too wet to add the additional 1/4 cup

Could the batter be made into cupcakes instead of a loaf? Thanks!
you could try it, but I have not, so I cannot say how long to bake them or how they would turn out
I do not consume alcohol, but I love chocolate and this loaf looks amazing! Is there something I could try using instead of the wine?
I would just make it like you would any other loaf cake, there is a great version that uses coffee
Do you use the ChocolateRouge Sweet Red, Milk Chocolate, or Dark Chocolate?
the milk and dark chocolate were our fvorites
What size loaf pan works best for this recipe? 8×4 9×5 or could you use 4-small 4×6 loaf pans! Thanks!
I always use a standard 9×5, but mini loaves are fun too

Is the butter salted or unsalted?
I know most people bake with unsalted, but I always use salted

This recipe sounds amazing, but I’d like to add another point of view.
If you ever have guests from Scandinavia or Baltic countries I recommend not to serve this cake without mentioning the ingredients before. I’m sorry to say but the cake looks exactly like blood pudding.

Chocolate Red wine and Complete Dark Black Cake, Some thing unique, Being a small bakery owner i can assure you my next Best Seller Cake, Thanks a lot for Sharing
thank you so very much
I made this using Aldi’s chocolate wine, half dark and half regular cocoa and 1 1/4 cup flour, baked 50min and it came out perfect. Will be a nice dessert with our homemade Ginger ice cream.
Could I use a port for the wine or would it be too sweet?
I would think port would be delicious
I made this for a friend’s birthday so I practiced a few times. I felt it was coming out too flat and bitter so I doubled the amount of baking powder to a full teaspoon, and went up to half a cup of white sugar. It came out just slightly taller, but definitely less dense somehow.
I also went up to 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and highly recommend.
I used a wine I found at Publix called Layer Cake (the zinfandel).
I also learned my friend is gluten-free, so I substituted the flour with King Arthur’s gluten free one-to-one flour substitute, and I couldn’t tell the difference.
Be sure not to over-butter your pan!
