the best bulk bin trail mix
trail mix gets a bad rap, but not all trail mix is created equally, and this bulk bin trail mix is not only healthy but so delicious
i’ve been eating trial mix since my days as a girl scout. back then it was pretty simple. peanuts because i really didn’t care for other nuts. raisins, and many, many m&m’s. a good snack for all that girl scout hiking, but not exactly healthy when the m&m’s outnumber everything else.
my dad made his own healthy version with nuts, seeds, and carob. let me tell you carob is not chocolate, not even a little bit. i think he was the only one that ate this version.
trail mix, healthy or not needs a bit of chocolate is you ask me.
i have been on weight watchers since february, and i am finally 4 pounds away from my goal weight. which is both exiting and scary, because that will happen right about the time we leave for new york. our entire itinerary for nyc revolves around the places we want to eat.
no matter how long the line is we will do dŌ. this is a must on stella’s list. levain bakery, pizza, and ian wants a hot dog from a cart. when you live in california and are in nyc you have to eat a bagel or two, and maybe even a cronut. so you can see maintaining my goal weight is not going to be easy, especially with two coast to coast flights and an 8 hour train ride.
enter this easy bulk bin trail mix. this is going to be my go-to snack for this vacation. raw nuts and seeds are the bulk of this mix with some unsweetened dried fruit and some good quality dark chocolate chips. like i said before, you need to have some chocolate.
- 2 cups of raw mixed nuts (I used 1 cup of almonds, 1/2 cup of pistachios, and 1/2 cup of cashews)
- 1 cup of dried fruit (I used 1/2 cup of unsweetened dried blueberries, and 1/2 cup of sour cherries)
- 1/2 cup of seeds (I used raw sunflower seeds)
- 1/2 cup of dark chocolate chips
- 1/8 tsp cinnamon (optional)
- i find it easiest to add the nuts, fruit, seeds, and chocolate chips into a large bowl, add the cinnamon and then toss well before I spoon it into an airtight jar, but there really isn't a right or wrong way to do trail mix
the best part about this trail mix is is that you can totally customize it to your likes. don’t like almonds, cashews, or pistachios, use walnuts or hazelnuts, or macadamias. can’t find dried unsweetened blueberries use cranberries or raisins. the options are almost endless. bulk bins make it easy because you can buy exactly the amounts you need. i’m already planning my next batch with walnuts, hazelnuts, chocolate covered coffee beans, and coconut.
also for a bit of added flavor i like to toss my trial mix with a dash of cinnamon.
skip the bag, and head straight to the bulk section of your market for this easy to make trail mix.
