practically everyone has a go-to banana bread recipe. some are sweet, decadent, and loaded with chocolate. others are on the healthier side. they are all delicious if you ask me. much like brownies, i have never met a banana bread i didn’t love.

this almond joy banana bread falls into the first category. and i’m not ashamed to admit the chocolate did not keep me from enjoying a slice with my morning coffee. the way i see it, it’s better than eating an actual almond joy and just as delicious.

how to make a great banana bread

it goes without saying but banana bread is all about the bananas.  if you want a great loaf, the bananas need to be very ripe. as in practically black.

don’t skip the dairy. the first loaves of banana bread i made were from a recipe in The Fannie Farmer Cookbook. it’s a good loaf, but not great. the addition of sour cream makes a good loaf great.

use brown sugar. it adds a more interesting flavor than granulated sugar.

for the “almond joy” part of the banana bread i added almond meal and unsweetened shredded coconut along with chopped dark chocolate. you could easily substitute chopped or slivered almonds for the almond meal. just make sure to increase the flour to 1 1/2 cups.

this may be my favorite banana bread ever, but then i say that with every loaf i bake.
