The {Best Ever} Glazed Doughnuts a.k.a. copycat Krispy Kreme

So…
it seems that my family does things a bit differently.

Today is the beginning of Lent.
A season where fasting is the theme.

However, my family celebrates this day with
Fastnacht Kuekeles  to go with our potato soup.

Fastnachts are basically beignets,
or doughnuts
and are typically eaten on Fat Tuesday.
{feast before the fast – makes sense to me}

I’m not sure how our family’s tradition began,
but I’m not going to change it now.

Every year on Ash Wednesday
I fry fastnachts,

but…I did make one tiny change this year.

A few months ago I splurged and bought myself a doughnut cutter.
I haven’t  had a chance to use it yet,
so why not today.

The two yeast doughs are almost identical,
and while these don’t taste
exactly
like  Krispy Kreme’s
they are pretty darn close.

Some may say they are even better:)

Glazed Doughnuts
2 1/2 cups if AP flour
1 package of yeast
1/4 cup of sugar
dash of salt
1/4 warm water
3/4 luke warm milk
1/3 cup of softened butter
{I warm  the milk with the butter}
1 egg
oil for frying

Glaze
2 cups of powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup of melted butter
milk or water {just a few tablespoons to get the right consistency}
whisk everything together while the doughnuts are rising the second time

dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup of warm water

combine the flour, salt, and sugar in a bowl
{make a well in the center}

whisk the milk, butter, and egg together
add to the center of the flour
using the dough hook attachment of a stand mixer  knead the dough
{it will be fairly heavy}
cover and let rise for about an hour

roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness
using your doughnut cutter
{glasses work just as well)
cut
cover and let rise again
{for about 30 – 40 minutes}

heat your oil over med – med/high
oil should be 350 – 375 degrees

fry only 2 or 3 at a time
flipping after about 30 seconds
they will cook in less than a minute

drain on brown paper bags
dip in the glaze while they are still warm
place them on cooling racks with paper under to catch the drips

Enjoy!

seriously fries and doughnuts are my weakness people
