Homemade Tortillas

There are a few things I know that my kids will always eat.

Mac and Cheese

and anything wrapped in a tortilla.

My kids LOVE tortillas. I buy at least two packages of them every week. But one of my goals for this year  is to reduce the amount of packaged items I purchase.  Since I buy more tortillas than pretty much anything else, I started there.

Flour Tortillas

I have made tortillas in the past, but was never really thrilled with how they turned out.  They were either too thick, too stiff, bland tasting, or just too hard to roll out.

Well I have finally got the perfect recipe. The dough is easy to work with, they are not too thin, not too thick, and best of all they are delicious. As in so delicious I highly recommend doubling the recipe. They will disappear before your eyes.

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3 Tbsp butter {melted}
  • oil {for spraying dough}

  • In a large bowl combine the flour and salt, stir in the water and butter
  • Once you have a smooth ball of dough, let it rest for 10 minutes
  • Divide the dough into 8 pieces, and roll into balls
  • lightly mist the balls with oil
  • roll each ball into a circle
  • heat a skillet or non-stick griddle on medium
  • cook tortillas about 1 minute on each side {flip when the tortillas begin to brown lightly}
  • you can keep them warm wrapped in a clean towel placed in an oven heated to 200 degrees

You will never want to eat store bought  tortillas again.
