i know. another banana bread recipe is exactly not what the internet needs. but i am constantly finding myself with extra-brown bananas in the fruit bowl. i should learn to buy fewer bananas. only, as soon as i buy fewer, we go through twice as many. go figure.

so, i buy my bunch of bananas week after week, and then end up with a bowl of banana bread bananas. not that i am complaining. i love banana bread. it’s one of my favorite breakfasts and snacks for afternoon tea.

i am not one to go in for food fads, or completely eliminate a food or food group from my diet.  my kids eat sugar, and fast food (more than i would care to admit) and cereal for dinner. i can make a meal of bread and cheese and take down a box of red vines without thinking twice.

thanks to my mother, moderation has always been our motto. our diet is relatively good; especially, when i see what my kids’ friends are eating. has family dinner completely gone out the window? but i am always looking for ways to make it a bit healthier, particularly when it comes to snacks.

this healthy chocolate chip banana bread checks all the boxes for me. extremely ripe (as in black) bananas mean you can use less sweetener. for this loaf i chose to use honey in place of the sugar. coconut oil replaces butter, and greek yogurt adds protein while keeping this whole wheat banana bread moist. of course banana bread is better with some chocolate. remember everything in moderation.

healthy chocolate chip banana bread

Ingredients:

  • 3 very ripe bananas, mashed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup greek style yogurt (i use 0%)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (or white whole wheat)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
   

Directions:

  • spray a standard loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray (or line with a parchment sling)
  • in a large bowl whisk together the bananas, eggs, yogurt, coconut oil, honey, and vanilla
  • in another bowl combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon
  • add dry ingredients to the wet, and stir just to combine - do not over-mix
  • fold in the chocolate chips, and pour batter into prepared pan
  • bake 5o-55 minutes - a pick inserted int he center should come out clean
  • cool in pan 15 minutes, then move to a rack to complete cooling
 

toasted banana bread with a bit of butter and some berries is one of my favorites for breakfast, but this healthy chocolate chip banana bread is delicious for a dessert too.
